Emily Harper: DHS Senior Spotlight

Where were you born?

I was born here, in Dalton Georgia, in fact I was born in Hamilton Medical Center. I have lived here my entire life. I have been in the Dalton Public Schools system since kindergarten.

Elementary School: Brookwood

What were you involved in at DHS?

I have been in Pep club (1 year), Spanish club (2 years), chorus(2 years), The Early Childhood Education Pathway (3 years, completing the pathway), Beta club (3 years), Yearbook (3 years, I am the co-editor and Centennial editor this year), National Honor Society (1 year), Spanish Honor Society (1 year), student council (3 years), Career Technology Agriculture and Education Honor Society (1 year), Work Based Learning (1 year), and in the musical, Oklahoma!, this year.

High School highlights, achievements and awards: I have taken AP classes since Sophomore year. I am an AP scholar with Honors.

Scholarships received?

The Milligan College Presidential Scholarship.

I chose Milligan College because both of my parents went there and loved it. I really love the small college atmosphere because you can get to know your professors and fellow class mates well. The classes are smaller, but rigorous, the campus is beautiful, and I look forward to the Christian environment.

What do you plan to Major in? I plan to major in Biology and possibly minor in Psychology.

What did you enjoy most at DHS?

I have enjoyed the community of DHS the most. Even though we are a pretty large school, many of my teachers still say hello and ask how I am doing, even if I had them 4 years ago! I love seeing people I know and saying hi or just smiling and waving. Most of my teachers have been very helpful and help me work with my crazy schedule.

Favorite teacher and why?

Mrs. Teresa Bennett has been one of my favorite teachers here at DHS, if not my absolute favorite. She made class really enjoyable. She broke concepts down so that we could understand them well, and she helped make large assignments, like the dreaded Junior research paper, not so overwhelming. She truly loved all her students and would do anything to help us. She is a great listener and she is kind and dependable.

Favorite subject or class: My favorite classes have been Biology and Anatomy. I have also really enjoyed Early childhood because I have gotten to teach the kids.

What has been your great accomplishment? I made a perfect score on the AP Language and Composition exam. I Have had all A's in my high school career. I have also completed 2 half marathons (both Disney Princess Half Marathons).

What has been your greatest challenge?

My greatest challenge has been balancing dance, challenging AP and advanced classes, church and family.

Who will you miss most at Dalton High?

I will miss many of my teachers! Mrs. Sanders, Mr. Wickes, Mr. Davidson, Mrs. Patrick, both Dr. Hoy, Mrs. Starks, Dr. Smith and Mrs. Franey. I have loved getting to know all the Special Education kids and teachers (I have known many of the kids since middle school because of the Friends program).

I would describe myself as somewhat of a smarty pants/teacher's pet.

What do you like to do in your free time? I love to dance in my free time. I have danced since I was 3 years old, 15 years. I dance at the Dance Theatre of Dalton. I love being able to express myself through my movements, and I love the feeling of being on stage and performing.

If money was not a consideration, what would you do?

If money was not a consideration I would travel the U.S. and the world to help as many people as I possibly could. I would love to see all the beautiful places and people. I would love to travel, but it can be incredibly expensive.

My favorite memory at DHS is...I have so many!

I loved getting to be in the musical this year and perform in a new capacity. I met many new people and I loved getting to sing and dance.

It's cliché, but I love lunch. I love being able to sit with my friends (and make new ones) and tell stories and jokes and just overall decompress from whatever has been happening. Lunch was a great time to catch up on homework, or get ahead. Sometimes we got to sit outside. The breeze and sunshine were a refreshing break from the fluorescent lights.
