Roberto Ortiz: DHS Senior Spotlight 2018

Where were you born? Where did you grow up? How long have you lived in Dalton?

I was born in Dalton, Georgia and have lived here for the past 17 years with my grandparents and my sister Xochilth, who is in the same grade as me.

Elementary School?

I attended Westwood(pre-k- Kindergarten), Roan School (1-2), Blue Ridge (3 –4), and Brookwood (5)

What were you involved in at DHS?

I was a member of marching band where I marched clarinet (8-11) and became drum major my senior year. I was a part of one act competition play (10-12) and in the orchestra for the spring musical (9-12). I was a member of Drama club (9-12), Beta club (10-12), Latin Club (9-12), Student council (12), SkillsUSA (12), and National Honor Society (12).

I have received a very generous music scholarship from the Hugh Hodgens School of Music at the University of Georgia, as well as the Willisa H. Marsh Future Educator's Scholarship, Dalton High School's Latin Club Scholarship, and the Future Music Educators scholarship from the Catamount Marching Band Club.

Plans After Graduation?

I plan on obtaining a job right after graduation and working all summer until August, which is when I will move down to Athens in order to further my education.

What do you plan to major in?

I plan to major in music education

I choose the University of Georgia because the opportunities to grow both as a prospective educator and as an individual seem endless.

What did you enjoy the most about DHS?

I liked being able to get cookies during lunch.

Favorite Teacher?

I cannot decide between Mr. Wickes and Mrs. Massingill, for they share a similar trait which I cherish very much. They care very deeply about their students and their well being, much more than simply trying to get students from one grade to the other. I wish to one day become a tenth of the wonderful teachers they are and attempt to make an impact on a student's life similar to the impact they had on mine.

Favorite Subject?

English. It's absolutely marvelous to read and discuss someone else's thoughts that have been accumulated to create a book or a poem.

What has been your greatest Accomplishment?

I am very proud of the times I have made All State Band because I know how hard I had to work to prove to myself, as well as the judges, that I am good enough to be in a band comprised of the top musicians of Georgia.

What has been your greatest Challenge?

I have often struggled with lack of motivation and utilizing the potential have, but I somehow still find a way to persevere and try my best.

The one thing I'm most proud of........

Being able to juggle school and extracurriculars for four years

Who will you miss most at Dalton High?

I will miss spending lunch with my friends, for the hectic day stopped long enough to allow my friends and I to eat and laugh together.

I would describe myself as...

Boisterous

Something people know me for is...

Being drum major (aka flapping my hands in front of the band at football games)

What do you like to do in your free time?

I like watching a lot of YouTube videos whether they be comedic, or philosophical or abstract. It broadens my view of the world.

Person who has influenced your life the most and why?

My grandpa because, against all odds, he still managed to come into a foreign country and establish his roots for the rest of my family here.

My favorite memory at DHS is....
