Scholarships

Welcome to DHS Scholarship Headquarters!

Local scholarships will be posted as we receive them.

Pay close attention to deadlines! You may email completed applications/essays to me at tina.scibilia@dalton.k12.ga.us or drop them by the counseling office at DHS by the deadline. Feel free to email me with any questions!
Many institutional scholarships are awarded to students who apply to college early. The scholarship processes are unique to each institution. To find these college/university institutional or academic scholarships, look on the college/university website under Financial Aid or search Scholarships.
Pay CLOSE attention to deadlines for admission applications and scholarship application deadlines. Don't let the money run out before you decide to apply!
If you need to write something to apply for a scholarship or college, make sure to have someone proofread your essay and application before submitting it.
Good luck!!
Mrs. Scibilia

Whitfield/Murray Historical Society Scholarships

These scholarships are designed to both recognize/honor some of our local history folks who have gone before and also have ties to your schools/communities.  Therefore, our scholarships are a bit different than many--we really aren't that interest in where the students are going to college, what their GPAs are, nor how much income the family has.  Ours are AWARD scholarships meant to recognize students who have already been doing things related to local history.  There are many ways a young person can qualify for one of these awards, but usually it's some combination of individual research or volunteerism related to our LOCAL history.  It could be a family history project they did in middle school, field trips they made to one of our properties, volunteer hours at a historic site, or research into the history of the carpet industry or some topic in local studies.  In fact, the student could do a project now and qualify by the April 1 application deadline

GA Military Scholarships

Every year, we award 42 Georgia high school students full scholarships to attend the University of North Georgia (UNG) – The Military College of Georgia and participate in the Corps of Cadets—the Boar’s Head Brigade. At of today, we only have 31 applicants! Would you be able to encourage your interested cadets to apply during their Christmas break?

The deadline is 1 February, so we’re less than two months out, and the application process is fairly involved. Detailed information and application instructions are at ung.edu/cadet/scholarships, then select “UNG Military Scholarship.”

The Georgia Military Service Scholarship (GMSS) pays for tuition, fees, room, meals, books, and uniforms for eight semesters; about $85,000 over four years.  In addition to the $85,000 scholarship, most recipients earn pay and benefits as Soldiers in the Guard that total at least $30,000 and up to $55,000 during their time in college, and many are paid even more for occupying leadership roles in the Corps of Cadets.  Applicants who are offered the scholarship enlist in the Georgia Army National Guard, participate in the Corps of Cadets at UNG, earn a bachelor’s degree of their choice, and upon graduating, commission into the Georgia Army National Guard as second lieutenants.  We have a Guard unit on our campus for GMSS recipients and other Guard Soldiers who are cadets: so for the first two years, there is no need to commute to weekend drills. After that, they enter the Simultaneous Membership Program and shadow Guard lieutenants in their Guard units.  GMSS recipients are not deployable while in college.

It is not necessary to enlist in the Guard to apply for the scholarship. However, recipients who accept scholarship offers will enlist before receiving benefits.

Collegeboard Opportunity Scholarships

Complete these 6 college planning steps for 6 separate chances at $500. When you finish all 6, you’ll be entered into a drawing for a $40,000 scholarship, but you can still earn money even if you don’t complete them all.
