Lowell Kirkman, husband of Mrs. Kirkman and sponsor for the scholarship, has said that Karen's wish was for this scholarship to help others take her place by giving back to their communities the gift of their piano talents. Lin will use the scholarship to continue his studies with piano teacher Laurel Im, who he has been taking lessons from for six years.
"Jason is very dedicated with much drive," Im said. "With a passion for music, he plays with great passion and enthusiasm."
Each applicant was required to submit an application with references, recordings of performances and other information. A screening committee for the scholarship reviewed each student's application. Lin has played piano for 10 years, performing at recitals and for Dalton High's marching band. The songs that he chose to submit to the judges for the scholarship were Impromptu in C♯ minor by Chopin and Consolation No. 2 in E Major by Liszt.
