Interns in Dalton High School's Transition Academy are energizing their community through their new "Java Cats" program, an in-school coffee shop serving smiles and iced coffee. The Transition Academy launched their Java Cats coffee shop in mid-September in partnership with Dalton High's Food and Nutrition department.

Anna La, a junior International Baccalaureate (IB) student at Dalton High School, is encouraging her classmates to practice student leadership by participating in community service. Most recently, La organized a community clean up initiative, gathering 38 people to pick up roadside trash at Brookwood Park and the surrounding areas.
Every year, Dalton High School successfully prepares students for their Advanced Placement (AP) exams. The school is now home to 36 AP Scholars for 2021, including eight AP Scholars with Distinction and six AP Scholars with Honor.
Jason Lin, senior at Dalton High School, has been recognized as this year's winner of the Karen Lightbody Scholarship for his outstanding piano skills. The Karen Lightbody Kirkman Piano Scholarship is administered by the Dalton Education Foundation. It is gifted to one applicant a year and pays for the recipient's continued musical lessons.
Bliss Jones is being celebrated for her dedication to excellence throughout the 2020-2021 school year. As the district COVID coordinator, Jones is recognized for playing an essential role in implementing the COVID response for Dalton Public Schools.
From the time that Jennifer Sumner was a child, she knew exactly what she wanted to be when she grew up: a teacher. Sumner was named Dalton Public Schools' Teacher of the Year at the district's annual employee convocation on Thursday, August 5.

Winter Guard Team Awarded Prestigious Scholastic A Classification

Dalton High School's Winter Guard was recently awarded a Scholastic A classification, a very distinguished recognition.
Amber Dean, teacher at Dalton High, led a group of 13 students to the competition. The team competed in a choreographed performance incorporating rifles, sabers and dance.
The competition is judged on many different components such as design analysis, technique and body movement.
Despite knowing the pressures that come with attempting to move towards the next classification, Dean decided to challenge her team by designing a show in which they would prepare themselves to be promoted.
The competition allowed for the freedom of choosing any theme to go along with the choreography. Dean decided to take an inspirational approach by choreographing a dance on how technology consumes our lives.
"The theme for our show this year is called, "disconnected" and it starts off with a monologue about how you statistically spend four years of your life looking at your phone," said Dean. "It's about how we have social media and all this other stuff that connects us, but we miss out on the one-on-one communication with others."
Although the theme is an important part of the competition, the choreography accounts for a huge part of determining one's classification.
Dean explained that earning a Scholastic A classification is no easy feat. It requires an extensive amount of work and patience to achieve such recognition.
"Scholastic A is a prestigious class and it takes a lot of years and programs for guards to get there." Dean said.
Due to the intensity of the competition, most schools opt to start the program during middle school and continue to advance in high school.
Through tough grind and fierce determination the team was able to hurdle through all obstacles by achieving this rare accolade in only one year.
Dean emphasized how proud she felt when learning that they achieved the Scholastic A classification. However, she owed it all to the hard work and perseverance of the team.
"I was excited for them, but with that comes a lot of work and responsibility," Dean said. "To be in the Scholastic A class is an extreme accomplishment regardless of where you place moving forward. The students were shocked and surprised but are ready to accept the next challenge."
